Message from the President

السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ
(Peace and Blessings Be Upon All of You)

I have much pleasure in presenting this booklet to provide a snapshot of the Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ) and its role to protect and further the interest of the Muslim ummah of New Zealand.

FIANZ is the umbrella organization managing the socio-religious life of the New Zealand Muslims. We are a religious community oriented association following the path of the "Ahle Sunnah Wal Jama'h". Our organisation is largely served by dedicated volunteers from affiliated Muslim associations across New Zealand. One of the main focus of FIANZ is to create unity among Muslims in New Zealand and to guide the community in doing good and to contribute towards creating a peaceful and harmonious environment so that we are able to strengthen the social fabric of a healthy and vibrant New Zealand.

FIANZ is a key institution in our community to take us forward as the model Muslim community that we aspire to be. In its 37-year journey, FIANZ has been through its fair share of trials and tribulations. Al Hamdullilah, since its inception in 1979, the profile and stature of the Federation has been rising. FIANZ has grown from strength-to-strength in providing the leadership for a progressive Muslim community in a harmonious, multi-religious, multi-cultural and secularly-governed New Zealand.

The Muslim community in New Zealand has transcended the limits of the early Chinese and Indian immigrants. At present, the Muslim community made up of over 50 nationalities that include Europeans, Maori, Arabs, Somalis, and people from across Asia. A huge percentage of the community has been born and raised in New Zealand and they call this country home in the real sense of the word.

Yet the history of Muslims in New Zealand, from those early beginnings, has never been separated from their religious identity. As a religious-community oriented organisation, FIANZ will always remain conscious of our obligation to the religion of the Oneness of Tawheed and following the path of "Ahle Sunnah Wal Jam'ah".

Alhamdulillah, it is indeed heartening to note that through the passage of time, tremendous positive changes and improvements have taken place in FIANZ. Certainly, the rapport between FIANZ and the community is strengthening. Be that as it may, we are, however, cognizant of the fact that in spite of our progress, we must reinvent ourselves to remain focused and relevant for the present and future. Understandably, mindsets have to be changed and paradigms need to be shifted. But our objectives remain grounded on basic Islamic values that unite, integrate and reinforce the Muslim community as one ummah.

As we look ahead into the future with the multiplicity of challenges that await, I cannot help but feel warmed by the fact that our richest asset is still the spirit of togetherness that we have developed among our community.

As an organization, we have managed to consolidate our achievements for the past 3 decades and I am very confident that with the support of the New Zealand Muslim community, we will be able to muster our community-spiritedness and be resilient in the face of new challenges. We are on the path to develop a united and a progressive New Zealand Muslim community of excellence. Insha Allah FIANZ will continue in our endeavor to move from strength to strength in propelling the Muslim community to greater heights.
