Future Leaders Programme (FLP)

The Future Leaders Programme (FLP), organised by the Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ) in collaboration with the Ministry for Ethnic Communities, is designed to support Muslim young leaders with essential knowledge, and leadership skills and to contribute to their communities and the wider society in Aotearoa New Zealand. Enabling them to be leaders for tomorrow.

The 2025 FLP will be held from 18 May to 22 May 2025 in Wellington.

Programme Objectives

Equip Kiwi-Muslim young leaders with the knowledge and skills to participate effectively in civic activities, fostering a stronger sense of belonging and knowledge about ways to help to shape the future. This includes enhancing their understanding of New Zealand’s government, parliamentary processes, social issues, human rights, and civic responsibilities. 

Programme Objectives Foster leadership qualities, enabling Kiwi-Muslim young leaders to become influential and active contributors within their communities and beyond.

Strengthen participants’ sense of responsibility and connection to their communities while facilitating engagement with peers, government officials, media, and MPs.

Develop the ability to advocate effectively for both personal and community concerns, empowering Kiwi-Muslim young leaders to address and resolve issues that affect them and their wider communities.

Who can apply?

The FLP programme is open to Muslim youth who are legal residents or citizens of New Zealand and meet the following criteria:

Terms and conditions

·        Applications for the programme will open from 17 March – 7 April 2025. No late applications will be accepted.  

·       FIANZ and the Ministry for Ethnic Communities are dedicated to a transparent selection process. There will be a selection panel consisting of a delegate from each organisation.  The decision of the panel will be final.

·        Applicants will be selected based on a set of criteria.  

·        If selected, the applicant agrees to attend all days of the programme.  

·        FIANZ agrees to cover travel, accommodation, and main meals. Participants will need to cover their own miscellaneous costs and other personal expenses.

·        If you are employed, you will be required to seek approval from your employer. Costs related to leave, salary or wages will not be met by FIANZ or MEC.  

·         Spaces are limited to 20 participants.  

Application Process:

  • Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) in the application form below and attach one letter of support. Incomplete applications will be declined.
  • Successful applicants will be notified by Friday, 25 April 2025 and provided with further details regarding their participation. 
  • Application Deadline:5pm on 7 April 2025. Late applications will not be accepted.
